Freshwater Prawns in Your Aquaponics System
Freshwater prawns will make a unique addition and increase the efficiency of your aquaponics system. Prawns are hardy, easy to grow and a highly valued product. Freshwater prawns consume detritus, thereby helping to break down and convert organic matter into material that can be used by plants. They also eat snails and can be used to control or eliminate them in aquatic systems.
Growing Freshwater Prawns
Juvenile prawns can be incorporated into the grow-out system of your choice, and will take approximately four months to mature to harvest size in your aquaponics system. As these juvenile prawns grow, their requirements for space also increase (large prawns weighing 2oz. will have a body length of seven inches, and will require one to two square feet of space). Substrate can be used in ponds to provide safe habitat for prawns to molt. Production increases when substrate is added to ponds. Several studies are currently being conducted to identify the optimal stocking and substrate densities for increasing pond production. Substrate should be provided in the nursery tanks. Provide substrate in the tank at six to twelve inch intervals. The ideal amount of substrate to use has not been identified experimentally but the amount provided is directly related to the number of prawn that is alive at the end of the grow out stage. Substrate should stay off the bottom of the tank and can be hung either horizontally or vertically. We use bird netting, mesh/screen or plastic warning barrier fencing for substrate.
Stocking Densities:
Post larvae to day 45: Up to 40 animals per square foot.
Post larvae to day 60: Up to 20 animals per square foot.
From day 60 to day 90: No more than 2 animals per square foot.
After day 90: 1 – 2½ square feet per animal.
